the
hating tree - track by track

how it came to be this way |
This is one of the best songs on the album. The message is clear; gather
whatever weapons available and vanquish the demons of the mind. Galloping
bass, aggressive everything - it launches the album, as well as the listener
into motion. Once it grabs on, hold tight because this is a flight.
a waiting time |
An excellent follow-up to the song before it; the demons have been silenced
and the doors are opening. All that's left to do is wait, perhaps forever.
The fast pace keeps the album moving. Music and lyrics are well done.
even now |
An especially deep melody about the unrelenting, ever-growing struggle
of not being able to let go. This song has can literally send chills down
your spine. The best slow song on the album, period.
of moondrop tears |
Beautiful lyrics lead this song which recalls the good and bad memories
of a long, lost love. This one has all of the words, but the music could
have been more developed and less repetitive. All things considered, very
good.
desert winds of jezebel |
The driving drums and 'winding' lyrics may convince the listener that
jezebel is right outside the door and knocking. The mystic words are a
calling and the music delivers this message perfectly. The entire piece
feels like a summons to rise up and celebrate the night.
resurrection |
Clearly the sexiest song of the album, resurrection is about the
longing need for intimacy and the desperation that follows departure.
Surrender and humility fill every word and whisper, again capturing the
emotion and meaning of the song wonderfully.
oceans |
Its message is simple; overcoming the distance between two people, whether
physically or emotionally (or both) is entirely up the to listener. The
shortest song on the album does what it's supposed to do, providing a
break from the pounding drums and giving the album a chance to breathe.
the well |
The well represents the long plunge we can all take in our minds.
The lyrics are stretched out to hold emotion and the drums are similar
to desert winds of jezebel. Guitars are great, but only take real
notice when Julie isn't singing.
atrophy |
The title sums up this song of disillusionment and question of fate. Here
is another song driven mostly by the vocals. The music simply could have
had more. The best part of this song is, interestingly, the end chorus.
seconds |
A vocally new approach with a combination of singing and speaking, painted
with some well-placed echoes. Seconds is about the realization
of time and its physical strain on us. Great mood music and above average
overall.
The hating tree |
The title track really sums up the theme weaved through the album; hurt
by betrayal and the need for closure. The 'tree' is a symbol of what many
people become in attempt to block out deep pain, until the sadness of
this realization is met. This song has a great blend of music and vocals,
along with an emotional piano solo to bring the hating tree to
a soothing end. Superb.
